Chrysanthemums generally represent happiness, joy, love, loyalty, friendship and optimism. They can also signify respect, gratitude, honor or sympathy.

The best time to plant chrysanthemums depends on the variety of the plant and the climatic conditions of the area. There are said to be mainly two types of chrysanthemums, hardy and florist.

Hardy chrysanthemums are perennial plants that can survive the bloom and winter. Florist chrysanthemums are seasonal plants that are grown for flowers and indoor decorations, these cannot withstand frost. The best time to grow the hardy variety is in the spring, after the frost or before summer. If you want to grow florist chrysanthemums, the best time to plant them is during the end of summer or before fall.

The Art of Growing

The secret of cultivating this elegant flower:

·      The apt place to grow chrysanthemums is in a sunny, well drained spot. They need approximately 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. They also need soil that is organically rich, lightly acidic and well drained. The soil quality can be improved by adding compost, manure or peat moss. Raised beds or containers can be used to prevent waterlogging and ensure efficient drainage.

·      Chrysanthemums require regular fertilizing and watering to ensure healthy growth. Make sure to not overwater the plant since it can cause fungal diseases and leaf spots. Watering frequency must be reduced during winter. Fertilizing of chrysanthemums must be done from spring to early fall with a balanced and high phosphorus fertilizer. The fertilizer must be diluted to half its strength to prevent overfertilization. Avoid adding fertilizers to your plant during late fall or winter.

·      Chrysanthemums are generally pest resistant but they can be attacked by some common pests such as:

o   Aphids. Small, green-black insects can suck up the sap from the leaves and stem and make them curl, wilt or yellow.

o   Spider mites. Tiny red-brown spiders can spin webs on the underside of the leaves and feed on the plant juices. They can cause the leaves to become dry, speckled and discolored.

o   Powdery mildew. Fungal disease can cause a white, powdery coating on leaves, stems and flowers reducing their photosynthesis and flowering ability.

·     Chrysanthemums display a spectacular display of flowers from late summer to early winter. However, the blooming period can be extended by using appropriate pruning techniques. Tips of the stems are often removed to encourage the plant to produce more branches and buds. This is done once or twice during spring or summer to create a bushier plant.
